I am absolutely in love with your beautiful photographs. You make Paris seem so much more beautiful than I ever remember having seen. Time to go again, methinks
Happy first anniversary Jodi. I loved your insights into Paris and the gorgeous photos. I've only ever visited in winter, when it is a completely different city. I think I need to go again!
Thank you, Julia - I've never been in winter, and would love to go! Although I would expect gently falling snow, and not the more likely endless grey skies...
Thank you for the link! I really enjoyed that look at the 2nd - I've wandered through some of the arcades before, but otherwise haven't spent much time there...
Happy birthday, Beautiful Things! Your glorious photos transport me to the only place I know that looks exactly like the image thousands of pictures and movie stills have planted in your head.
Lovely evocation of Paris, or paradise. As a student of French literature many many years back, I used to love roaming cemeteries and looking for author graves:) Baudelaire’s grave is at Montparnasse and I recall trying to find it. You make me want to go back alone and spend time there! I was there a few years back with family—not the same—but we did hit Laudrée for delicious macaroons. I was also trying to find Café de Flore where Sartre and other existentialists hung out near Boulevard St. Germaine…
I walked by Café de Flore and Les Deux Magots, but they were so expensive! It was enough just to take photos and soak up the atmosphere. I'm a total sucker for visiting cemeteries and especially looking up author graves!
You bet they are--probably banking on past history! I am glad we have something in common:) I was so obsessed with Sartre as a young student. His "Existentialism is a Humanism" had a deep impact on me. I intend to re-read and blog about how I feel about it now...probably very differently;-) Talking about wanderings, do you know I randomly found a restaurant called "Le Bateau Ivre" in Manhattan, NY a couple of years back re Rimbaud's namesake poem. I was very tempted to go in and ask the owner how he chose that name.
Once again I am slain by the depth of history that you describe in your travels. I would be the tourist with my mouth open constantly walking into walls and off of curbs. The typical small-town boy lost in the big city. Your photos are beautiful, and illustrate what you describe so beautifully. I thoroughly enjoy every mind-blowing journey that I take walking with you through history and literature!
That's totally me, Jim! Wandering around with my mouth wide open, so excited about what I'm seeing that I have to share it with everyone! It's all so exciting. Luckily I haven't hurt myself yet...
Truly beautiful writing and photographs from an exceptionally beautiful city. You transported me to Paris and it was a wonderful experience. Thank you.
The Jesuit father François d'Aix de La Chaize was indeed the confessor of Louis XIV. Having the King's ear, he also had enormous behind-the-scenes influence in church and national affairs. What would he think if he knew that he is only known today for his association with a cemetery? His many enemies would no doubt laugh sardonically. In any case, no need to apologize for returning to Paris. Who can ever get enough of it?
Paris, my home away from home. I return yearly and always discover more. I’m always asked why I keep going back. It’s because I love immersing myself in beauty in all its forms.
Happy one year Substack anniversary, Jodi! And I'm glad you are bringing back some of your first posts because I haven't had a chance to read them yet, and really enjoyed this one. I look forward to your conversational tone and beautiful pictures every time I see one of your posts pop into my to-read list. :)
HAPPY ANNIVERSARY, JODI! Thanks for re-sharing this gem. I admire all the lovely photos and fun facts, plus you, our inimitable tour guide. We'll follow you wherever you go! 😁

This is FABULOUS, magnifique! And the timing. I shall be re-reading it on the train to Paris on Monday! Thank you.
Thank you!! I'm looking to your report on your trip! You will be posting a report, right? :)
Mmm, maybe … ah, now I think of it, perhaps a guest ‘Postcard from the Potager’. I’ll take notes!
PS … your pictures are all stunners!
Really enjoyed that. Thanks
Wonderful! We have a bit of a love hate relationship with the city but the 2eme stole our hearts.

Incidentally, Chicago is our favourite city in the US after our old hometown of LA

…love Paris, but, yeah, I’m not a big fan of the Eiffel Tower either. 💙🤍❤️

Well, how many confessors do we remember? At least he's known for something!
